Thermal imaging camera loan scheme

We have a thermal imaging camera available for residents to borrow for free.

What is a thermal imaging camera?

Thermal imaging cameras show where your home is losing energy. The colour-coded pictures on screen show temperature differences that identify where to improve insulation, block draughts and keep warm.

The camera works best when there is a temperature difference between inside and out (cold outside with the heating on indoors). Inside, dark blue shows you cold spots and draughts. Outside, yellow/white shows you heat being lost from your home.

How does the loan scheme work?

The camera can be loaned to residents, Parishes, Town Councils, community and voluntary organisations based within Tonbridge and Malling Borough. Residents may borrow the camera for a week. Parishes and other organisations may borrow the camera for up to one month.

You can arrange to borrow the camera using the booking form below. The camera needs to be picked up from and returned to our offices at the Gibson buildings in King’s Hill or Tonbridge Castle during office hours by arrangement with us. Photographic ID and proof of address will be needed to collect the camera.

While borrowing the camera, you are responsible for what happens to it and for returning it to us safely. You are responsible for securely packaging the camera and any other equipment (the charger, and returning it in the box it was provided in). You will be charged a fee of £375 if you fail to return the camera, or if the camera is not returned in full working order.

You are responsible for the proper collection and storage of all images, materials and information relating to the use of the camera in a way which is fully compatible with GDPR regulations.

The camera comes with a user guide that sets out the basics of how to use the camera, view and save images. An additional guide will be emailed to those hiring the camera.

The camera has shown me where heat is being lost. What do I do now?

There is a lot you can do to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Some of it can be done quite quickly and cheaply through DIY. Adding a thick curtain or a thermal lining to curtains over draughty doors and windows, sealing gaps in floors, and fitting draught excluders around letter boxes and doors will make a difference.
