Alterations

You’ll need Building Regulations approval for most projects that involve installing or replacing key fittings or facilities in your property. These types of changes can affect the safety, energy efficiency, and overall performance of your home.

Common examples include:

  • Replacing windows, including the frames
  • Replacing glazed doors where glazing covers more than 50% of the door
  • Installing new electrical circuits or replacing wiring
  • Adding or upgrading plumbing or drainage (e.g. new bathrooms, sinks, showers, or WCs)
  • Installing a new boiler, heating system, or other combustion appliance
  • Renovating an existing wall(s), floor or roof to a building (some exemptions apply)

These works must meet specific technical standards to ensure they are safe and compliant. For more detailed guidance, visit our technical guidance page.
