You must check if you need building regulations approval before you construct or change a building in certain ways. Here you can find out if your project is likely to need approval, see the services offered by our building control team, check any fees that may apply and find out how to make an application.
Building regulations are defined by the English and Welsh Governments and approval is needed for most construction projects. This includes:
The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) website provides a detailed list of works that require an application.
Are there any exemptions?
Some types of minor work may be exempt from Building Regulations. To check if this applies to your project, visit our exemptions page.
If you're unsure whether your work needs approval contact our Building Control team is here to help for advice. Details at the bottom of this page.
Already started work?
If your building work has already started, or even been completed, you can still apply for approval through a Regularisation application. One of our Building Control surveyors will inspect the work to ensure it meets the required standards. Without a Regularisation Certificate, the work is considered unauthorised and could cause legal issues, especially when selling your property.

Remember, planning permission is separate from Building Regulations approval, you may need both.
