Apply for building regulations approval
Before you build, extend, convert or make alterations to a property, you may need to submit an application for approval.
There are three types of building control application:
- full plans - the most commonly used type of application. We will check your plans meet the building regulations. You also pay an additional inspection fee so that we can check the building works meet the regulations
- building notice - a notice telling us that you intend to carry out small domestic building work that does not need detailed drawings
- regularisation - required for works that have been carried out without permission. This is more expensive than the other types of application and you may need to open up completed building works so that we can see if the building regulations have been met

How to apply
To apply, follow these steps:
Step 1 - Identify the type of application you wish to make and download the form.
Step 2 - Work out the application cost using our standard charges or refer to your individual quote, if we have provided one.
Step 3 - Complete your form.
Step 4 - Submit and pay for your application.
Email your completed form with your plans, specification and calculations to building.control@tmbc.gov.uk

Payment
You can pay for your application:
- by phone using a debit or credit card by calling 01732 876230
- by sending us a cheque made payable to 'Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council'. Attach a covering letter with the address and/or application reference and send to the address above
What happens next?
Once we have received your completed application form and payment, we will check the details and if anything is missing we will endeavour to contact you within two working days.
When the application has been accepted we will send you an acknowledgement letter with the application number and our surveyor's contact details.
