Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has announced plans to celebrate the King’s Coronation at a special community event in Tonbridge on Sunday 7 May.

People across the borough are invited to join the Coronation Big Lunch at Tonbridge Castle from 12 noon until 5pm. Everyone is encouraged to wear red, white and blue, bring a picnic or enjoy the variety of food and drink that will be on sale.

The event will feature entertainment from the West Kent Big Band, 17th Tonbridge Scout and Guide Band and the Loose Women Morris.

Celebrations will continue into the town with nearby River Walk providing a venue for art and craft stalls while union jack decorations will line the High Street which will also feature special coronation-themed hanging baskets. The council and local voluntary group, Tonbridge Town Team, are also planning to invite High Street businesses to take part in a coronation window display competition.

The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will take place on Saturday 6 May. Tens of thousands of events are expected to take place across the United Kingdom over the weekend with more than 30 street parties booked to take place in Tonbridge and Malling.

Cllr Des Keers, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: ‘Given the many challenges our community and the country has faced in recent times, the Coronation is a wonderful opportunity to come together in celebration and mark this historic occasion.

‘We are delighted to be able to offer Tonbridge Castle as a venue where people can gather to have some fun and feel part of a big moment in our history. I look forward to welcoming people from across our borough for what promises to be a great day.’
