From 16 January 2024 significant changes were implemented for overseas voters, including:

  1. Removal of the 15-year limit - There is no longer a 15-year limit on voting rights for overseas voters.
  2. Extended registration period - Individuals residing overseas can now register to vote in the UK, regardless of how long ago they left or were last registered to vote in the UK.
  3. Extended validity of declarations - Overseas declarations for postal/proxy votes are now valid for three years, expiring on 1 November in the third year after taking effect. For instance, if your declaration is effective on 1 March 2024, it will expire on 1 November 2026.
  4. Online registration - People living overseas can now register online.

These changes mean that British citizens, regardless of the duration of their stay outside the UK, will have the opportunity to participate in UK parliamentary elections. Eligibility requires prior residence or registration to vote in the UK.
