Dedication to service and contribution to local life marked in ceremony.

Two former councillors have been honoured by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council in a special ceremony at the council offices in Kings Hill last night (12 July).

In recognition of his contribution to the borough the title of Honorary Freeman was awarded to Owen Baldock while Allan Sullivan was made Honorary Alderman for his services to the council. Both have shown the utmost dedication and, between them, have accumulated more than 50 years of service as councillors.

The title of Honorary Freeman is the highest award that the council can bestow on someone. Owen Baldock was elected in 1984 representing Castle ward until his retirement in 2019. In those 35 years he served on various committees and boards, most notably as Chair of the Area 1 Planning Committee and as Cabinet Member for Environmental Services; Communities, Innovation and Improvement and as Deputy Leader.  Owen also served as Mayor from 2015 – 2016. At the ceremony Owen was praised for his instrumental role in achieving the construction of Tonbridge Swimming Pool and the restoration of Tonbridge Castle Gate House.

The title of Honorary Aldermen recognises dedication and eminent service to the council.  Allan Sullivan was elected to represent Blue Bell Hill and Walderslade in 2003, which he served until 2019. He was chairman of various committees, including Area 3 Planning Committee, Finance and Property Advisory Board, Planning and Transportation Advisory Board and Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Sue Bell, presented certificates to Owen and Allan at the ceremony where she was joined by their colleagues and friends to congratulate them on their new titles. Sue said: ‘It gives me great pleasure to confer the title of Honorary Freeman upon Owen Baldock and Honorary Alderman upon Allan Sullivan.  Between them, they have served the council with great distinction and been valued residents who have done so much for the borough over the years.  I am delighted that their exceptional contributions to local life are being recognised in this way.’
