A pub scheme to reduce alcohol related crime has launched in Tonbridge and West Malling.

The Best Bar None accreditation programme aims to improve standards in the night-time economy by strengthening relationships between landlords, the police and local councils.

The first phase of the initiative launched in Tonbridge and West Malling on 24 May. If successful, the Tonbridge and Malling Community Safety Partnership will support the roll out to all parts of the borough.

The aims of the Home Office-backed scheme are to:

  • reduce alcohol related crime and disorder
  • build positive relationships between licensees, the police and local authorities
  • improve the knowledge of bar staff to help them manage licensed premises
  • set minimum standards and champion improvements
  • share good practices
  • highlight how operating responsibly can improve profitability

A launch event at the Humphrey Bean pub in Tonbridge was attended by Tonbridge and Malling borough council Leader Cllr Matt Boughton, Deputy Mayor Cllr James Lark and Kent Police.

Cllr Matt Boughton said: ‘We all want to feel safe at night in our towns and we welcome Best Bar None as something that can help achieve that. While Tonbridge is notable for its low crime figures, we must not become complacent and continue to find ways to maintain and improve on the safety in our streets.

‘I encourage all licensed premises in Tonbridge and Malling to sign up to this initiative and promote responsible drinking everywhere.’
