Event will explain new regulations

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is partnering with neighbouring authorities and the UK’s biggest landlord association to host a free event outlining new rules on energy efficiency in the rented sector.

The event on 17 March between 6:30pm and 8pm will cover everything landlords need to know about minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) and how it affects their properties. Regulations now prohibit the renting out of properties with energy efficiency ratings of F or G unless there is a valid exemption.

Since the government awarded TMBC’s housing team funding for resources to engage with landlords and tenants in the borough, the council has identified more than 60 homes falling below the required MEES standard and worked with the landlords to bring about improvements. Their tenants now have warmer, more energy efficient homes and lower energy bills.

The online event will update attendees on the regulations and provide all the information needed to help landlords stay compliant with MEES regulations. Landlords who let sub-standard property and who have not registered a valid exemption will be liable to financial penalties and other enforcement action.

Cllr Kim Tanner, TMBC’s cabinet member for housing said: ‘It’s important for us to ensure that landlords understand their responsibilities to upgrade their properties which have poor energy efficiency ratings and how to comply with the current legislation.

‘Our housing team is there to help them achieve this but will also take enforcement action where necessary. Landlords who attend this special event will be getting the very best information about compliance.’
