Latest step in campaign to spruce up towns and villages

High streets and public areas defaced with unsightly graffiti are being blitzed clean in a borough-wide programme to spruce-up communities.

The clean-up operation organised by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has so far seen more than 30 incidents of graffiti removed from sites in Tonbridge, West Malling, Wrotham, Walderslade, Snodland and Aylesford.

Local company GB Ltd are carrying out the removal works using high pressure washing equipment to blitz walls, signs, bridges, bins, bus stops, footpaths, planters and telephone exchange boxes.

The graffiti clean-up is part of the ‘Welcome back’ scheme, which aims to make shopping areas attractive to visitors and residents, following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cabinet Member for Technical and Waste Services, Cllr Piers Montague says: 'Some of the graffiti in the borough is highly visible with offensive language and could have a negative impact on communities as life gets back to normal. I’m so pleased that we’ve been able to rid these areas of graffiti and I hope it brings positive results for local businesses.'

The ‘Welcome Back’ scheme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, which helps local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, create jobs and local community regenerations.
