Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is exploring the potential for Haysden Country Park to be managed by a specialist leisure provider in the future.
The Council has approved a recommendation to Cabinet to commission a full cost-benefit analysis into whether transferring management to the Tonbridge and Malling Leisure Trust would benefit the park’s long-term future. No decision has been made at this stage.
The proposal comes as the Council considers how best to improve long-term investment for Haysden Country Park as a valued public asset, and amid plans for local government reorganisation due to take place in 2028.
Any option examined would focus on maintaining free public access, high-quality services for the community, safeguarding the park’s natural environment and supporting environmental stewardship.
The unique 160-acre park has held the Green Flag Award for 20 consecutive years. It is also recognised by Natural England and is designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest, reflecting its importance for wildlife as well as recreation.
The Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust, has expressed an early interest in the proposal. The not-for-profit organisation currently manages Leybourne Lakes and four other leisure facilities on the Council’s behalf, including Poult Wood Golf Centre, Larkfield Leisure Centre, The Angel Centre and Tonbridge Swimming Pool.
Cllr Des Keers, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “It’s very early days and no decision has been made. We know that Haysden Country Park is treasured by the people of Tonbridge and beyond, which is why we are exploring whether a different management model, working with a leisure specialist, would be a more effective way to maintain environmental standards, maintenance, accreditations and concessions at the park.
“We’re not making a decision at this stage – this is about understanding our options and ensuring that the park continues to be maintained to the high standards that have been established by the Council for generations to come.”
The Council will commission the cost-benefit analysis and share the findings with relevant stakeholders, ahead of any further consideration by Council members.
