The current Mayor

Cllr James Lark, Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling

Cllr James Lark became Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling on 17 May 2023. HIs chosen charity is Arthur's Quest, a relatively new charity which supports those with a genetic variant in the SLC6AI gene. The condition is very rare and occurs from early childhood and throughout the lifespan of those affected, leading to serious health problems such as autism, intellectual disability and seizures. The condition currently has no cure and affects children, including a number in the Tonbridge area.

James has lived in Tonbridge and Malling for almost all of his life. He was born in Tonbridge, educated at Tonbridge School, married in the church of St Peter and St Paul and still lives in the borough with his wife, Jill. They have three grown up children and five grandchildren, which keep them busy.

Now retired, James has worked in a variety of roles during his career, finally running a property maintenance company until his retirement. He has also been a professional toastmaster and Master of Ceremonies for over 20 years.

Both James and Jill are actively involved with the community. James is a past President and member of Tonbridge Lions Club and is involved with Tonbridge Dementia Friendly Community, while Jill has been associated with Hadlow Pottery for a number of years and is also involved with the Dementia group.

James was elected to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council in 2019 to serve Medway Ward in Tonbridge. Since elections in May 2023, James has represented Bourne Ward which includes Hadlow, Golden Green, Shipbourne and Plaxtol.

When not fulfilling his role at the council, James enjoys music, being a keen saxophonist, fly fishing and has an interest in specialist cars.

James's deputy is Cllr Steve Hammond, who represents Aylesford South and Ditton ward.
