Learn about our fraud investigation policy
The council has a team of trained investigators to examine allegations of benefit fraud.
Every claimant has a duty to complete their application form accurately, truthfully and to report all changes of circumstances promptly. Failure to do so can be a criminal offence.
If a case has enough evidence suggesting that an offence has been committed, the claimant may be invited to attend an interview under caution (IUC).
At the end of the investigation a report is prepared and the council's prosecution policy is used to decide if any action is needed.
