Taxi parking

Last Updated:

All drivers should park in accordance with the Highway Code and local signage.

The Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Policy includes ‘The Good conduct guide for licensed drivers’ which states, amongst other things:

17.7 General

17.7.1 Drivers shall:

c) Obey all Traffic Regulation Orders at all times

17.9 Responsibility towards Council Employees

17.9.1 Licensed drivers are expected to be polite and courteous at all times and to comply with any reasonable request made by a Licensing or Civil Enforcement Officer. Verbal or physical abuse will not be tolerated.

To clarify

Taxi drivers are not permitted to:

  • wait in the Tonbridge High Street loading bays as these are ‘Goods Vehicle Loading Only’, although taxis may stop to allow passengers to board or alight the vehicle when hailed.
  • park in a car park without paying for their stay. A stay in a car park would include: when a driver leaves their vehicle to look for a missing customer, walking a customer into a shop, helping a customer shop or when parked to have refreshment, even if the driver stays in the vehicle. Drivers should park in accordance with all provisions of the Off Street Parking Places Order.

Loading and unloading whilst on double yellow lines is only allowed while customers are accessing or exiting a taxi, and assisting vulnerable passengers to their destination, it does not include going with them to help them shop, or looking for missing customers.
