NHS Health Checks

Last Updated:

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is rolling out community NHS Health Checks programmes across the borough. This check supports the National NHS Health Check programme and is free for those that are eligible.

The NHS Health Check programme aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and certain types of dementia.

Everyone between the ages of 40 and 74, who has not already been diagnosed with one of these conditions, or who has certain risk factors, will be invited (once every five years) to have a check to assess their risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetes and some forms of dementia. You will also be given support and advice to help reduce or manage that risk.

What does the check involve?

The check looks at your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. The check will take about 20–30 minutes and will involve simple questions and measurements. It will also involve a simple blood test to measure your cholesterol level.

What happens after the check?

You will be given your results and told what they mean. Anyone with increased risk factors such as high blood pressure will be referred to their doctor for further tests.

You will also be given advice on how to lower your risk factors and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You will also be given information on programmes or initiatives running in the borough to support you leading a healthy lifestyle.
