Construction demolition noise

Last Updated:

Can I make a complaint about noise from construction, demolition or Industrial activity?

Noise from construction and demolition sites may be considered a statutory nuisance and can be investigated by the council.

However, we adopted the following "core hours" during which it will normally be considered reasonable for noisy work to be carried out at a site adjoining a residential area:

  • 07:30 - 18:30 Monday to Friday
  • 08:00 - 13:00 Saturdays
  • No noisy works on Sundays or Public Holidays.

Please note that whilst these days/times apply to major construction sites, they are broadly applicable in most construction/demolition circumstances.

If the noise is only within these times it is unlikely that we would be able to class it as a statutory nuisance and thus could not take any action.

How can the problem be reduced?

Defra have produced a booklet, 'Bothered by noise? There's no need to suffer,' which gives advice on how to deal with noise problems.

How do I make a complaint?

If you feel the problem may be classed as a statutory nuisance, have spoken to the person who manages the site (or do not feel you are able to) and the noise continues, please contact us with the details.
