Petitions for a change of governance for Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council

The Local Government Act 2000 provides that electors in the Borough of Tonbridge & Malling can petition the Council to hold a referendum on whether the local authority should change to a different form of governance. A petition must be signed by at least 5% of the local government electors for the Borough.

Each year the Proper Officer of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is required to publish the 'verification number'. This is the number equal to 5% of the number of local government electors included in the register of electors as of 15 February that year.

The verification figure for 15 February 2019 is: 4,845

This number applies to any petition submitted to the Borough Council before 1 April 2020. However, a new number will be published in February 2020 and if the new number is less than 4,845 then the new number will apply from the date it is published.

This notice is published by Julie Beilby, the Proper Officer for Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

Petitions to request a referendum, which must contain at least 4,845 valid signatures of registered local government electors living and registered within the Borough of Tonbridge & Malling, should be sent to:
