Choose how to vote

Last Updated:

In order to vote you must be registered. Please visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to register. Once you are registered, you may choose to vote in person, by post or by proxy.

Voting in person

Once you are registered, you will be able to vote in person at a polling station unless you apply to vote by post or proxy. For most elections you will normally receive a poll card before polling day which tells you where your polling station is. If you are not sure, please contact us at voting@tmbc.gov.uk. If you have a postal or proxy vote set-up and wish to vote in person instead you must cancel your existing arrangement before the deadline (normally around two weeks before polling day) in writing, providing your date of birth and signature.

Voting by post

If you register to vote by post we will send your voting papers to you around two weeks before polling day. You can then complete them and post them back to us (we provide a reply-paid envelope). You will not be able to vote in a polling station. To apply to vote by post, download the postal vote application form, print it out and complete it by hand. Make sure you provide your date of birth and signature.

If you are unable to sign in a consistent or distinctive way due to age or disability, or you are unable to read or write, then we may be able to grant you a waiver so you don't have to sign. Please email us at voting@tmbc.gov.uk for further information.

You can then either scan the completed form and email it to us at voting@tmbc.gov.uk or post to Electoral Services, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Gibson Building, Gibson Drive, Kings Hill, West Malling, ME19 4LZ.

Voting by proxy

A proxy is someone who votes on your behalf. If you register to vote by proxy, we will send details to your proxy so that they can vote in person at a polling station in your place. They can also apply to vote by post on your behalf, once the proxy vote is set up. You will need to tell your proxy how you want them to vote. To apply to vote by proxy, download the proxy vote application form, print it out and complete it by hand.

You can then either scan the completed form and email it to us at voting@tmbc.gov.uk or post to Electoral Services, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Gibson Building, Gibson Drive, Kings Hill, West Malling, ME19 4LZ.

If you wish to vote by proxy but currently have a postal vote set-up, you must first cancel your postal vote before the deadline (normally around two weeks before polling day) in writing, providing your date of birth and signature.

If you cannot print out any of these forms, please email voting@tmbc.gov.uk and we can send you a copy in the post. Please provide your name and address, and state which form you require.
