Tattooists, piercing ,electrolysis & semi-permanent makeup registration

Last Updated:

Unless you are a medical practitioner or dentist you must register with your local authority to practice;

  • Acupuncture
  • Tattooing
  • Electrolysis
  • Ear piercing
  • Body piercing
  • Semi permanent makeup/skin colouring

The purpose of registration is to ensure that basic health and safety standards are maintained in any premises where these activities are carried out. It is compulsory to register both the premises and the operator under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 and adhere to the byelaws. For further information about the byelaws, visit www.gov.uk/guidance/local-government-legislation-byelaws or download a copy in a PDF format.

Tattooists and semi-permanent makeup practitioners may also be interested in the Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Applying for a Registration

Applicants will be required to pay a registration fee, which covers the cost of administration and inspection of the premises on a periodic basis. These checks will ensure the necessary standards are being maintained.
