Tonbridge Fairtrade Town Status

In February 2018, the Borough Council passed a comprehensive resolution to support Fairtrade and the work of the Fairtrade Tonbridge Steering Group in working towards Fairtrade Town status.

Over the course of the following six months, the Steering Group, comprising representatives from the Borough Council, Tonbridge Town Team, local community and faith groups and business, set about meeting the five goals. With the support of a wide range of local businesses, community organisations, faith groups and educational establishments, an application was made in August 2018.

On 22 October 2018, Tonbridge was awarded Fairtrade Town status by the Fairtrade Foundation, and in October 2019 the Steering Group were successful in their application to have this status renewed for a further two years.

Some of the activities to date include:

  • Development of a Fairtrade Tonbridge Business Directory
  • Introduction of a Fairtrade stand at the Tonbridge Farmer's Market
  • In 2019 and 2020, the group took part in Fairtrade Fortnight, and will be looking to do more activities in future years.
  • The Steering Group has also been helping to promote Fairtrade Foundation campaigns such as Discover Fairtrade Gold

There is an article on the Tonbridge Town Team website that provides further information on Fairtrade Tonbridge, the activities it has undertaken and a list of local retailers that supply Fairtrade Products.
