Prohibited by law

Last Updated:

When occupation of a property is prohibited by law, or it is kept unoccupied because of action being taken under an Act of Parliament to prohibit its occupation, it may be exempt from council tax. This includes a property that is to be compulsorily purchased.

However, if squatters occupy the property, regardless of its condition, they will be held liable for the council tax as residents and no exemption will apply.

If you think your property should be exempt, please email us. Alternatively, you can contact the council tax team on 01732 876388.
