Council tax - exemptions
In some cases we can reduce the amount of council tax you have to pay.
Occupied properties
- If occupied only by students
- If occupied only by people aged under 18
- All the occupiers are severely mentally impaired
- An annexe which is occupied by a dependent relative
Unoccupied properties
- If the property requires major repairs/structural alterations
- If owned by a charity
- If empty due to the usual resident being in detention
- If the property is left empty because the usual resident has gone to live in a care home or is away receiving care elsewhere
- If the property is empty because the usual resident has died
- If occupation of the property is prohibited by law
- If the property is being held vacant for a minister of religion
- If the property is empty because the usual resident has moved elsewhere to provide care
- The property is empty because the usual occupant is a student who is away studying
- If the property is unoccupied and has been repossessed by the mortgagee
- Property where there is an unoccupied annexe which cannot be let separately from another dwelling without a breach of planning control
- If the property has been left unoccupied by a bankrupt person
- If a caravan, pitch, boat or mooring is unoccupied
