Discount for annexes

From 1 April 2014 you may be eligible for a 50% discount on the council tax bill for an annexe if:

  • it is unoccupied; or
  • the person living in the annexe is a relative or the person who is responsible for paying the council tax on the main property.

Unoccupied annexes

A 50% discount will apply if:

  • it is unocccupied; and
  • it forms part of a single property; and
  • the annexe is not already exempt from council tax.

Discount for relatives living in an annexe

If you live in an annexe you may get a 50% discount on your council tax bill if you are a relative of the person who is responsible for paying the council tax on the main property.

To get this discount, the annexe must:

  • form part of a single property; and
  • be occupied by a relative of the person who is liable to pay the council tax on the main property, and
  • be the main or only home of the person living in it; and
  • the annexe must not already be exempt from council tax.
