Who can apply for benefit

Last Updated:

You can apply for Council Tax Reduction:

  • you are on a low income and have under £16,000 in savings; and
  • you (or your partner if you have one) are liable to pay the council tax for property in which you live.

If you are of pensionable age and you have a high income and/or savings, you can apply for 'second adult rebate'. This is designed to help those who don't qualify for a reduction in their own right but have someone living with them who is on a low income.

Universal Credit

Please note that most new claimants in our borough now need to claim Universal Credit. If you fall outside the Universal Credit scheme you can still claim Housing Benefit.

You can apply for housing benefit if:

  • Fall outside the scope of the Universal Credit scheme; and
  • you are on a low income and have under £16,000 in savings; and
  • you (or your partner if you have one) are liable to pay the rent for the property you live in.

If you sell your home and then rent it from the new owner, you might still be entitled to housing benefit. More information is available in the DWP's guidance leaflet.
