Central Government has confirmed support for a new Garden Community in Borough Green. Following a bid by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council in November last year, Borough Green Gardens is one of 19 new garden villages announced as part of the Government’s Garden Communities Programme.
With £150,000 awarded to help fund the project, the money will be used to facilitate delivery of high quality housing, which members of the local community can access. This will be enabled through support from Homes England on design and delivery, developing infrastructure proposals and working towards a masterplan that clearly demonstrates how a new Garden Community will operate.
Phase one of the project is likely to start in 2022/23 with 1,720 properties potentially completed by 2031. Borough Green Gardens will not only provide new homes, but also opportunities for employment, education and healthcare as well as the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of the wider area.
Located to the north of Borough Green, an integral part of the development will also be to deliver a relief road for Borough Green improving traffic conditions, air quality, pedestrian safety and general environmental conditions within the existing village.
Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Nicolas Heslop says: “This is a very welcome acknowledgement of the opportunities that the new development will provide. And while this strategic site which is included in our Local Plan can be delivered without any further assistance, the importance of the early delivery of the relief road and other important infrastructure has been emphasised throughout the plan making process. We can now plan for the best possible development and we look forward to working with a range of partners to progress towards the delivery of a sustainable community that benefits from high quality design and much needed investment in infrastructure, in a timely manner in parallel to our submitted Local Plan.”
The Government’s Garden Communities Programme is focused on delivering high quality new developments that create a strong local identity and include good quality design, integrated and forward looking transport options and generous, accessible open space to promote health and wellbeing.
The policies for Borough Green Gardens are set out in the Borough Council’s Local Plan, including a map outlining the area for the new development. Please visit www.tmbc.gov.uk/localplan for further information.
