Street naming and numbering register
Street Naming & Numbering is a statutory function of Local Authorities under the powers of various Acts including the 1925 Public Health Act. We also play an important part in maintaining the Local and National Land & Property Gazetteer ( LLPG & NLPG ).
It is our intention that all properties within the borough should have clear and concise addresses. Similar or confusing addresses may cause problems for statutory bodies including Royal Mail and especially the emergency services; this in turn may cause problems for the house owner/occupier when requesting these services.
Importance of having the correct address
Modern day navigation and mapping systems such as SatNav, StreetMap or other computerised address databases will require entry of a correct postcode and address. Many service delivery organisations rely on this data to locate and access a property. These include:
- Postal delivery
- Emergency Services
- The Land Registry
- Delivery companies
- Computerised mapping and address databases (eg SatNav )
- Utility companies
How to name and number your property
The naming and numbering procedure will differ slightly depending upon whether you are a developer or a resident.
For guidance and associated fees please see the Street Naming and Numbering Policy (updated April 2013). A copy of the current fee schedule (April 2013) is also available separately.
