Seven Tonbridge and Malling residents and 14 local groups were presented with a special Love Where You Live Environmental Champions Award on Friday 27 October at Tonbridge Castle.

The Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Roger Dalton, thanked the award winners for ‘going the extra mile’ to improve their local environment and presented them with their certificates and prizes.

The scheme, which was launched in 2009 to encourage more people to take an active role in helping to improve their environment, is open to all Tonbridge and Malling residents and anyone can nominate a person or a group to become an Environmental Champion.  The scheme is now in its 9th year and is sponsored once again by Veolia.

Veolia’s Regional Manager David Fitzgerald and Tonbridge and Malling Contract Manager Paul Fitzgerald also presented some of the prizes to the Award winners.

This year’s winners, who come from all corners of the borough including East Malling, Larkfield, Burham, Wouldham, Vigo, Borough Green, Tonbridge, Snodland, Aylesford, Ditton, Hadlow, Golden Green Mereworth and Hildenborough were rewarded for a range of environmental efforts including: regular voluntary group litter picking, wildlife gardening for wellbeing, River Medway tidal clean ups, creating a sustainable local food cafĂ© , ‘Dementia Friendly’ gardening and volunteering to support the maintenance and upkeep of the country parks managed by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council.

Mayor, Cllr Roger Dalton, said: “Congratulations and a huge thank you to all our award winners this year for their amazing efforts to help keep this beautiful borough clean and tidy. I am sure that their dedication will inspire others to become future Environmental Champions and I am also very grateful to Veolia for supporting the awards again this year.”
