Eight young cricketers from Tonbridge and Malling received a warm welcome at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday 8 October as they attended a special presentation to receive a ‘Young Leaders in Cricket Award’.
The event began with all the Young Cricket Leaders from across the South East, 179 in total, being presented with their awards by Kent and England Under 19 Player Ollie Robinson, himself a former Young Cricket Leader in 2013. Everyone was then treated to a guided tour of Lords.
The Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Councillor Roger Dalton attended. Matt Floyd from Sky Sports was also there, and both he and Ollie gave inspirational speeches on how sport has enriched their lives and helped them in their current careers in sports journalism, presenting and top class competitive sport.
The Young Leaders in Cricket Programme is open to people aged between 14 and 16. It offers a complete training programme to include a Young Leaders Cricket Coaching Award; an introduction to umpiring and scoring; a course in groundsmanship; and training in basic First Aid awareness.
The aim of the programme is to give candidates the skills and qualifications needed for improved leadership, better understanding of coaching, as well as the opportunity to do 20 hours of volunteering to cricket within their school, club or community in order to help develop cricketing opportunities within their local area.
Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Roger Dalton, says: “Many congratulations to all the young cricketers who have received an award this year – I thoroughly enjoyed my day with them at Lord’s Cricket Ground. This course provides a great opportunity for people to get involved in the coaching and organisational side of cricket as well as playing the game itself. We hope that this year’s award winners will go on to inspire other young people to take up the sport and help to boost an interest in cricket locally.”
There will be another Young Leaders in Cricket Programme in 2018, for more information on how to take part, please contact the Council’s Leisure Services team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01732 876166.
