Sustainable Community Strategy

Serving you better

The Sustainable Community Strategy for Tonbridge and Malling sets out a three year plan to address issues related to the local quality of life that are of concern to local people.

The document is based on extensive consultation with residents, local community groups, parish councils and young people and builds on the two previous community strategies prepared for the borough. The latest document is the first to be prepared on behalf of the Borough's Local Strategic Partnership, which will lead on its implementation.

The strategy sets out what has been achieved and identifies what new issues now need to be addressed to further enhance the quality of life in Tonbridge and Malling. It contains an overview of action for the next three years and provides a focus for all the agencies identified to achieve improvements in important local services in the borough and so continue to 'serve you better' in the future.

The community strategy was adopted by the Council in the Autumn of 2009.

What is a sustainable community?

A sustainable community is a place where people can enjoy a better quality of life now and for generations to come. People need jobs, a healthy local economy, a decent home, good public services and an attractive, safe environment. To create a sustainable community, action needs to address the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area and its inhabitants.

Our Vision

A borough which comprises vibrant, healthy and distinctive local communities where people's physical, emotional and spiritual needs are taken into account and where inequalities are reduced. A place which is safe and clean, where local people can access good quality health and social care; where the countryside is protected and enhanced and local transport and housing meets people's needs.
