Produce
Every week you can stock up with fresh meat and fish, all sorts of locally grown vegetables, fruit and nuts, all sorts of bakery products, cheeses, honey, jams, fudge, preserves, juices, free range eggs, plants, herbs, flowers as well as craft stalls selling hand made cards, prints and paintings. Sourced locally
Buying direct from the producer means you can ask questions about the produce on offer, allowing you to pick up hints and tips on cooking or preparation and even taste before you buy! The traditional market atmosphere makes shopping a pleasure not a chore, letting you taste, talk and buy at your own pace. Farmers' Markets have many environmental, social and economic benefits; they help to:
- Support local farmers and producers, which means money stays in the local economy, providing employment and investment in the countryside.
- Support smaller producers and, where possible, those producing free range, organic and pesticide-free food, which is good for the environment
- Cut down on waste and packaging
- Reduce air pollution and traffic congestion caused by transporting food over long distances
- Allow local people to buy wholesome, fresh and healthy produce at reasonable cost
- Cut out the middle man so that producers receive a fair return for their efforts.
- Provide a market place for traditional breeds and varieties, which helps to maintain genetic diversity.
- Allow you to ask questions about how the food is produced. Food tastes better if you know where it comes from!
