Your Refuse Collection Service

The Council's Waste Services Team works closely with the council's appointed contractors, Veolia Environmental Services (the Council is not responsible for the content of external internet sites), to provide domestic refuse collection services.

Domestic Refuse Collection

All suitable properties in the borough have been provided with a black wheeled bin for their non-recyclable waste. The collection crew will only collect waste that is contained within the black bin and not waste placed at the side of or on top of the black bin. This encourages everyone to think more about what they are throwing out and how they may reduce, re-use or recycle their waste. Providing wheeled bins allows you to contain your waste and prevents littering or pests gaining access.

A small number of properties, such as flats or some terraces, are not suitable for wheeled bins and are regularly provided with black sacks for their refuse collection. These properties can present up to six black sacks per collection.

You must not place soil, rubble, hot ashes, compacted garden waste or liquid waste in your black bin or black refuse sacks. Please place rubble in the Soil and Rubble section at your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre

Most properties in the borough have their black bin collected every fortnight with a green-lidded bin and green box collected on the alternate week. However some properties are on a weekly collection of their black bin and fortnightly collection of their green box.

Your bin(s) must be presented at the boundary of your property by 7am on the day of your collection, and should be taken back in as soon as possible after collection has taken place.

All the waste collected in black wheeled bins or black sacks is disposed of at the Energy from Waste plant at Allington (the council is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites). Each year around 37,000 tonnes of domestic waste is collected and burnt to create electricity at this facility.

Properties that have a wheeled bin are generally provided with a standard 240-litre wheeled bin which, along with the recycling and green waste services provided, is considered to be sufficient for most household refuse needs. If you find that your wheeled bin is too large and difficult to handle then you may ask for a smaller 140-litre black bin. Larger 360-litre black wheeled bins are provided, upon request, when six or more persons occupy a property or where there are exceptional circumstances, for example a number of young children in nappies.

If you are unable to present your wheeled bin at the boundary of your property due to infirmity or disability the council does provide a "pull-out" service where the refuse collectors will enter your property to collect your bin(s) and recycling from a suitable location and return your bin(s) to the same location.

To request a different sized black bin or a "pull-out" service, please contact the Waste Services Team.

Kent County Council also provides a number of services to help you recycle or dispose more of your waste. This includes providing Household Waste Recycling Centres (the council is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites)

The council operates a number of collection services for refuse , recycling , green waste and bulky goods . We can also provide you with ideas to help you compost or reduce food waste or re-use other waste. We also provide street cleansing services. Please note that commercial refuse collections operate under a separate arrangement.

An online list is provided to help you recycle, compost or dispose of more than 150 different types of household waste.

Collection services may vary during Easter and Christmas Public Holidays.
