Snodland Partnership
Snodland (population - 9400) is a town situated on the western bank of the River Medway, just south of the Medway towns. The town has had a long association with the paper manufacturing industry and, more recently, with cement production.
The original partnership
The Snodland Partnership was set up in 1997 by three organisations - Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Lafarge UK and Snodland Town Council - who all wanted to generate improvements in the quality of life for Snodland's residents. Each partner put in substantial funding to help fund an 'action plan' of projects which in the first year included an enhancement scheme for the town centre with CCTV, a ball park for young people, the purchase of a community minibus and a community mosaic. The chosen projects reflected the community's own priorities.
Administration
The local Town Council took over administration of the Partnership in 2001. The Partnership's activities have continued to be guided by local concerns. It paid for an additional Community Policeman to work in the town as well as implementing a number of traffic management schemes including a busy section of road outside Holmesdale Community College and on St Benedict Road, a residential road prone to 'rat running'.
The partnership today
Today, the Snodland Partnership is going from strength to strength. There are now eight members of the Partnership which are Snodland Town Council, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Lafarge Cement, Trenport Investments, Berkeley Homes, Snodland Chamber of Commerce, Smurfit Townsend Hook, and the Co-op. A new Constitution has been adopted to guide its work and initiatives are under way to link the work in Snodland with similar community development activities being undertaken by the East Malling Partnership and the Trench Partnership in north Tonbridge.
