Home Safety - Kitchen Safety

  • Never leave the stove or grill unattended;
  • Make sure that you know where to turn off the electricity, gas or water supplies in an emergency;
  • Don't have electrical flexes trailing across the floor or over hot or wet areas. Try to organise things so that appliances are situated close to a socket;
  • Arrange your storage so that you can reach items you use often without straining. It is safer to store heavy items lower down;
  • Flooring should be non-slip and easy to keep clean;
  • Good lighting is important in the kitchen, and if you have poor eyesight, strong colour contrasts on worktop edges and any steps can also prevent accidents;
  • Saucepans with glass lids enable you to see what's happening inside without raising the lid and risking a scald;
  • Ensure that there is a clear, heat resistance surface next to the hob top where you can put down hot, heavy dishes as soon as you take them off the heat;
  • Ensure that saucepan handles are not hanging out over the hob; or over hot surfaces as they could be knocked off or become hot.
